Product Description

This small, easy to pack book is the authoritative source for identifying the flora of Montana. The keys are technical, but generally user friendly with a good glossary and character illustrations to help with the keying process. The actual key starts with the separation of Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. These groups are separated sequentially with the primitive ferns and trees treated first, followed by the separation of the flowering plant families. These families are then listed alphabetically and each is keyed to genus, then the genera keys identify individual species. The state is divided up into six floral regions that provide general distributional information that is of some aid in the identification of species and habitats. These general floral groups include alpine, Rocky Mountain, Pacific Northwest, Palouse Prairie, and Great Basin. Some species and characters are illustrated with quality line drawings within the key, but unfortunately these are few.

Nice Balance
This book provides a unique and nice balance between ease of use and thoroughness of a technical key. It is lacking on illustrations, however this is a fair price to pay to have a small, easy to take to the field, yet comprehensive regional flora.
