Product Description

The northwest coast of the United States contains some of the most deadly and explosive volcanoes in the world that are just a small part of the “Ring of Fire that encircles the Pacific Ocean. Best known is Mount St. Helens for its huge eruption on May 18, 1980 that killed dozens of people, devastated miles of land and deposited ash on cities hundreds of miles away. Besides Mount St. Helens there are others that have to potential for more dangerous eruptions and many of these peaks are destinations for climbers and provide scenic beauty that people love to live next to. While everyone knows about Mount St. Helens and the potential of Mount Rainier, they may not realize the extent of volcanoes in the region.

This book covers all the volcanoes in the Cascade Mountains as well as those in the Mono Lake area of California in a comprehensive, yet non-technical manner that is intended for anyone wishing to know the geology of these mountains. The volcanoes are discussed individually and information on their structure, history and specific hazards posed by each if they should erupt. Also included is such information as how one can find these mountains and visit by car, on foot or with some by climbing. Some climbers enjoy understanding the science and geology of the mountains they scale. There are several maps and tables indicating such things as volcano location, eruptive histories, mudflows, physical eruptive processes and more for the specific mountains. The book is also loaded with descriptive photos and drawings of the mountains and their features.
