This flora is an exhaustive flora that includes all the known native and introduced plant species (about 3,400) known to occur in the Keystone State. The introduction includes instruction for use, explanations of symbols, how to collect and preserve specimens, a floristic description of Pennsylvania and an explanation of the Endangered and Threatened species program in the state. The technical keys are divided into ferns and allies, gymnosperms, dicots and monocots. A good glossary is also provided.

This is not an easy book to use and is not recommended for the casual botanist. Some of keys work well, but some are more problematic. The species illustrations are adequate line drawings, but these are of lower quality than most serious regional floras. The book is very heavy and not appropriate for taking to the field. If you are a serious botanist in the northeast, then you need this book. If you just want to learn the common flowers near your home or where you like to hike, this is not for you.
