Product Description

The Jepson Manual is the botanical bible of California. California is the most botanically diverse state in the U.S. and one of the more diverse regions in the world. Capturing all the species of the California Floristic Province in one book is a remarkable feat. Additional information provided includes the pronunciation guide, glossary of terms, symbols explanation, and the geographic, geologic and climatic breakdown of California.

However, some tradeoffs have been made to include this incredible amount of information. The separation features in the key couplets and the species descriptions are a bit light. Only about half the species are illustrated in fair, but not great small drawings that must be found on other pages. The book is very heavy and far too nice to pack in the field, but anyone half serious about learning the flora of California must have one of these and invest some time to learn how to use it.

From the Inside Flap
First published in 1925, Willis Linn Jepson’s Manual of the Flowering Plants of California has been a standard reference for teachers, students, and naturalists. Since that time, hundreds of new species have been identified and botanical investigation has become more sophisticated in its methods. Now Jepson’s philosophy of making botanical information available to all is again realized in this all-new volume, which includes the immense store of information on California flora accumulated over the past decades.

With contributions from two hundred botanists across North America, this Jepson Manual is the most comprehensive resource and identification guide to the nearly eight thousand varieties of native and naturalized plants that grow wild in California, botanically our richest state. For the first time, the means to identify plants (using key traits and illustrations) is accompanied by special information such as horticultural requirements, endangerment, toxicity, weed status, and notes on the management of sensitive species. Four thousand plants are illustrated in more than two hundred plates, identification keys have been designed for ease of use, and terms have been simplified and illustrated, making the new Manual the most authoritative field guide for the expert and amateur alike.

Used this many times in college
This book is for the botanic enthusiasts out there who have some educational background... It won't be very handy if you're not familiar with specific botanical terminology. But it's very worthwhile to have on your bookshelf if you're serious about id'ing wildflowers and such.
