The Jepson Manual is the botanical bible of California. California is the most botanically diverse state in the U.S. and one of the more diverse regions in the world. Capturing all the species of the California Floristic Province in one book is a remarkable feat. Additional information provided includes the pronunciation guide, glossary of terms, symbols explanation, and the geographic, geologic and climatic breakdown of California.

However, some tradeoffs have been made to include this incredible amount of information. The separation features in the key couplets and the species descriptions are a bit light. Only about half the species are illustrated in fair, but not great small drawings that must be found on other pages. The book is very heavy and far too nice to pack in the field, but anyone half serious about learning the flora of California must have one of these and invest some time to learn how to use it.

First published in 1925, Willis Linn Jepson’s Manual of the Flowering Plants of California has been a standard reference for teachers, students, and naturalists. Since that time, hundreds of new species have been identified and botanical investigation has become more sophisticated in its methods.
