Rötzenberg

Overview

The Palatinate is very rich, in sandstone rocky formations : this is a big evidence ! When you are driving in this area, you will be surprised, to see so much rocks, which are popping out of the canopy ! The sector of Dahn is the most known, by the hikers and the climbers, but there are other sectors, which are equally very interesting to explore ... This is the case, for the sector, which is locating between Hauenstein and Annweiler. Here, you will find the object of our visit : the Rötzenberg pillar ! This one is situated at the south-west of Gossersweiler - Stein, at a maximal altitude of 459 meters. The sandstone pillar measures 63 meters height, he's so one of the highest in all the country ! This picture is a general view of the pillar, which was taken from the guard house (peregrines control) ... Together, we will discover this very high and wild site : so, let's go !

Getting There

For reaching the Rötzenberg pillar, there are several options ... But, the easiest is the next ... First, you are coming from Annweiler. You take the southern direction, with the B48 road. When you are arriving at the summital point (291 meters), you will find a cross. Here, quit the B48 road and take the new road on your right, direction Silz. You pass the village of Völkersweiler and then, you are reaching the next village : Gossersweiler. Here, you have to turn right and to penetrate in the heart of the village. You follow the main road and, at your left, when you will see the sport-field indications, you will follow the small way. This one is reaching the forest, very fastly ! Be cautious with your car, the passage is small ! Finally, you can park your car near the Sportverein Gossersweiler house. You will have a beautiful view on the Asselstein and the Trifels, from here ... You have to do the rest by foots. The access is good marked (see the picture over). You need 20 minutes for reaching the base of the pillar. You will walk on an agreable forestian way, on the northern and eastern slopes of the Rötzenberg mountain. Your mouth will falling open, when you will be at the base of the pillar : 63 meters of height and very vertical walls ! Total crazy, it will be sure ...

Red Tape

Like too much other rocks in the area, the Rötzenberg can be closed to the public, between the 1st february and the 1st july of the year ! This is due to the fact, that the peregrine falcon is nesting and breeding here ... In this period, it will be forbidden, to hike and to climb on the site, to do noise, to camp and to bivouak, to do fire, ... The site is strongly controlling, by special forestian guards ! And if you will penetrate the site, without authorization, you will be caught and you will pay a money punition ! Good to know ...
