Overview

The Palatinate is having a lot of remarkable climbing and bouldering rocks, it's an evidence ! Climbers of all levels know very good the fact, that this woody country is having too much rocky destinations (the hikers equally ! ). One of the biggest rocks of this picturesque country, is certainly the massive Pferchfeldfelsen, which is situated over the Bärenbrunnertal valley, near the village of Schindhard. This very long and high rock is measuring 51 meters of height and almost 650 meters of length : a record in the Bärenbrunnertal valley ! He's very popular among climbers, because of his climbing tower, named as " Pferchfeldturm " . The forest is extremely dense at the Pferchfeldfelsen and only the half part of the rock is popping out of the canopy. The Pferchfeldfelsen is dominating the entry of the Bärenbrunnerhof valley, a very famous hiking and climbing destination in the Palatinate. But before of going there, you have to know, that the site is difficult to approach and that the flora is extremely dense, wild ... It will be a very big adventure, for visiting this exceptionnal rocky destination ! I prefer to inform you in advance, simply ...

Getting There

The Pferchfeldfelsen is not very easy to reach, but there are several options, for approaching the site. The fastest access is to begin your ascent from the village of Schindhard, with climbing the north-western slopes of the Tannenwald mountain. A very small path is driving you directly at the base of the very spectacular climbing pillar (you will reach the site in only an half hour). Two others possibilities are to approach the site from the Bühlhof farm (at the South-East) or from the Bärenbrunnerhof farm (at the East). Recently, the Pferchfeldfelsen have been included in the very picturesque " Busenberger Holzschuhpfad " (the wood-shoes path of Busenberg, in english). The forestian environment is extremely junglual at the Pferchfeldfelsen and in summer, it will be almost impossible to visit the site : the giant farns are hidding all the bases of the rocks and the ticks are having an incredible paradise, here ! So please, be cautious and stay on your guard, if you will try to explore this site in the hot summer season !!!

Red Tape

At the Pferchfeldfelsen, you will find the very famous peregrine falcon. This one is the most popular bird of the Palatinate, and especially, of the palatian climbing rocks ... The breeding and the nesting of the peregrine is meaning, that the site will be closed for the public (climbers and hikers), in a period of the year which is establishing between the first february and the first july ! You will find the list of the forbidden rocks on the very good website of the Pfaelzer-Kletterer. Between august and january, the Pferchfeldfelsen is free of access and the climbing activities are authorized. Good to know. The best time for discovering this fabulous climbing destination, is to come in the late autumn days, when the junglual flora is disappearing and when the colors of the foliage is having very hot and intense colors (yellow, brown, orange and red ! ). It will be very nice for taking photos, it will be sure ... In very dry and cold winter days, the visit of the Pferchfeldfelsen will be good possible, without flora and risks of ticks !

Panorama

The eastern climbing pillar is smaller than the western one, it's an evidence. But from his summit, you will discover a magnificient and very wild panorama, on the Löffelsberg and Bühlhof forests. The access is very hard, but the site is totally unknown and preserved (very rich flora on the summital plateau : bonzaï-pines, callunas and cladonias lichens). The western pillar is only reachable at the bases, the summital structure will be only reachable by the experimented climbers : what a pity ! For having a wonderful panorama on the Pferchfeldfelsen rocky site, you have to hike on the top of the Löffelsberg (altitude : 405 meters). From here, you will discover one of the most remarkable panoramas, in the sectors of Busenberg and Schindhard ... And the path for going there is marked (wood-shoes path of Busenberg).
