Puhlstein

Overview

When we are talking about " Puhlstein " , we have to do with a very popular hiking and climbing destination, in the heart of the Palatinate, in Germany (sector of Busenberg and Dahn). This picturesque rocky crest is situated above the vicinity of Busenberg, at the North-East. The maximal altitude of this location is reaching 445 meters, it means that the Puhlstein is the second height of the sector of Busenberg (just after the Jüngstberg, with 488 meters ! ). At the Puhlstein rocky crest, the most important and remarkable part is certainly the eastern one, with a very high and massive climbing pillar (total height : 45 meters). This one is popping out of the canopy and is visible from far away in the valley of Busenberg. He's equally one of the breeding and nesting places of this country, for the peregrines (falcons). This fact means, that the Puhlstein can be closed for the public (hikers and climbers), in a period which is establishing between february and july ... In the Wasgau, the Puhlstein is equally known as " Buhlsteinpfeiler " (very popular name among climbers), or as " Budelstein " (by the hikers, for this one).

Getting There

The Puhlstein rocky crest can be reached by several options ; the fastest one is to begin your walk from Busenberg, at the West. You will find a good parking lot, near the sports field of Busenberg, named as Hexenplätzel. This one is the point of departure for several others hiking destinations, like the Eichelberg, the Löffelsberg (Busenberger Galgenfels), or the Tannenberg (Pferchfeldfelsen). A serpentine path will brings you on the top of the mountain, which is entirely wooded (remarkable pines forest). The very picturesque " Busenberger Holzschuhpfad " is running along the rocks and is equally accessing the panoramic pillar of the Buhlsteinpfeiler.

There are three other access possibilities, they are the next :
- from the North, by the farm of the Bärenbrunnerhof.
- from the North-East, departure fixed in Oberschlettenbach (Bühlhof).
- from the South-East, departure fixed in Vorderweidenthal (Erlenbach).

Red Tape

Like too much rocks in the Palatinate, the Puhlstein is the place of the legendar peregrine falcon ... Between february and july, the site can be closed for the hikers and the climbers, because the peregrines are nesting and breeding here. If you are penetrating the site when he's closed, you might be caught by the forestian guards, for receiving a money punition ! So, please, stay on your guard and respect the rules : it's very important for protecting this remarkable kind of wild bird ! Panorama

Oh yes, of course ! The Puhlstein is hidding a magnificient panorama, from his summit ... The summital structure of the climbing pillar is easy to reach, with a good marked path (Busenberger Holzschuhpfad). The summital platform is cool degaged, without flora on the floor. It's a good site for practicing a picnic, when the sun is shining. And especially, is the panorama marvellous : you are dominating all the valley of Busenberg, which is surrounded by a lot of heights and very famous climbing destinations (examples : Schlüsselfels, Buchkammer, Jüngstberg, Sprinzelfels, Eichelberg, ... ). At the east, you can see the big forestian ocean, between Vorderweidenthal and Lug. This sector is located near Annweiler-am-Trifels and is named as " Trifelsland " ! This one is extremely popular in the Palatinate, by the experimented and professionnal climbers. From the Buhlsteinpfeiler, above Vorderweidenthal, you can recognize three important hiking destinations : the ruin of Lindelbrunn (castle) and the two giant climbing rocks of the Rödelberg and the Rötzenberg ... Not bad ! Finally, at the South, you can see the small village of Erlenbach, with the very famous castle of Berwartstein. At the background, in good weather conditions, you can see the Northern Vosges (France). Good !
