Overview

Jochbodenkopf / Piz RusennaPiz Rusenna / Jochbodenkopf as seen from the north

The north-easternmost part of the Sesvenna Group is located in the tree-coutry-triangle south of Nauders, where Switzerland, Austria and Italy meet. Its most famous mountain is Piz Lad, thanks to its location directly above Reschensee / Lago di Resia and Reschenpass / Passo di Resia. Piz Lad is connected with the remainder of its subgroup by a long ridge, the central mountain of which is Piz Rusenna (Rhaetian) or Jochbodenkopf (German). Consequently the whole subgroup has been named after it.

Piz Rusenna is located on the Swiss - Italian border and reaches 2802m. Due to the fact that the ridge bends eastward here, the summit is located farther away from Reschensee / Lago di Resia and the Vinschgau Valley / Val Venosta. Consequently the routes to the mountain are much longer (than for Piz Lad) and the mountain less crowded. Usually the mountain is climbed via a ridge traverse from either Piz Lad or its southern neighbour Äußerer Nockenkopf. Strictly speaking, the traverse avoids Piz Rusenna, but a short detour takes you to its summit. The easist route, a steep scramble runs along the south ridge, while the north ridge route is a UIAA I climb on rotten rock.

Like all summits in this part of the Sesvenna Group, Piz Rusenna is a perfect lookout mountain. Apart from the mother group you can see the Ötztal Alps to the east across Reschensee / Lago di Resia and across the Inn River there are the Silvretta, Samnaun and (further north) Ferwall Groups.

Getting There

Piz Rusenna, Piz LadPiz Rusenna and Piz Lad

There Are two possible trailheads for Piz Rusenna: Reschner Alm / Alpe di Resia beneath Piz Lad and the village of Rojen / Roia beneath Äußerer Nockenkopf. Both trailheads are easy to reach from Reschenpass / Passo di Resia. In the village of Reschen / Resia follow the signs to the Schöneben / Bellpiano ski area. The road passes the ski lift and winds its way into the Rojen Valley.

For the Reschner Alm trailhead, follow the sign, which leads you across a 6km dirt road to the Alm. For the Rojen trailhead follow the road to its end.

Red Tape

There's no red tape here. However, the summit ridge is located on the border of Italy and Switzerland (or the other way round) so bring your ID. ID-checks will be eliminated after Jan 1st 2009 when Switzerland joins the Schengen treaty. Still, customs contrls may occur since Switzerland is not part of the EU
