I would agree that these are pretty good shells. They have great breathability and water resistance and are really light. I use these with fleece pants on mountaineering climbs and they work great. Only problem is the durability. I have nicked them twice with my ice axe and both times cut a hole in them about an inch or two long. Goretex patch kits work great to fix but I wish they were a little bit tougher. Guess that's the price you pay for the lightness of these shells. They weigh next to nothing!

Ideal for situations where you don't expect rain or snow but need backup or where you're going super-light. (I go jogging with them over winter all the time.) But I've also used them in warmer, clearer days to keep the sun off my legs and found that they breathe well enough to work. If you have crampons on, make sure to wear gaiters. These rip easily. One complaint: side zips don't come up high enough to allow you to easily put these on without removing your boots.

Great light duty rain and wind fare. Takes up little space and weight for the protection. But, I shredded them badly with crampon nicks.

Huge Fan. I won them in a race in Canada, but worth the price just the same. I have not found a lighter weight pant that absolutely sheds waters like this precip. Full length zippers appear to be bomber after 1 year use and the same goes for the velcro waste adjusters. Fits well at the bottom over most boots. Don't know why Marmot does such a better job on their shells, you think it would be a simpler product to compete with.

The light weight of these pants results in me stuffing them in my pack to be safe. Breaths rather well. I only noticed moisture during high excersion during steep climbs. I ripped mine scrambling over some rocks about a year ago and have found that a small piece of duct tape maintains the waterproof quality.

I've been very happy with my PreCip Pants. I got them a couple of years ago at REI - on sale! I used them last year on a very rainy all-day hike in Big Basin State Park near Santa Cruz, CA and they kept me dry.

good "in case shell"
I wouldn't use these as my primary shell, they are not as breathable as gore-tex type material although the full lenghth side zips provide some good venting. Like others have said, great quality for a very lightweight pair of pants to bring along in case you need a waterproof shell.

Excellent rain pant
Keeps the rain out well. Can get a bit warm, only somewhat breathable. I tend to run hot so other people might find them perfect for mild rainy days. Perfect for temps around 40. Recommended

Really a 4 1/2.
If you can keep the waistline covered no moisture will enter these pants. Light weight and reasonably durable (I've snagged my trekking poles on the ends a coule of times without a mishap).
Breathability when it is raining and you are sweating is not great and body moisture will not evaporate. Also, when exposed to all-day rain they do not dry overnight in cool weather

Keeps Rain Out, Perspiration In
I like that the pants are full zip and that they'll keep the rain out. They're decently durable as well. Unfortunately they don't breath that well. Overall, if you're looking for light, waterproof pants, these will do and they're not too expensive.

does the job
i rarely use these pants... they mainly stay in my pack and come out only when they are REALLY needed. for this, they are fairly lightweight, cheap and reliable. the zipper can get stuck on itself sometimes but comes undone fairly easily. the one time i can think of where they performed beautifully was sitting on a small ledge during an unplanned bivy. there was no protection from wind on the ledge making it a rather cold night, but these pants kept the wind out wonderfully! other than that, i've used them for glissading and rain hiking. they breathe adequately and keep the water out. great for just in case pants!

- Very light weight and packable.
- Excellent water resistance, I've used them in heavy downpours with no leaks.
- Reasonable price.
Cons:
- Not good for high abrasion activity. No bushwacking, no glissading, no crampons, no steep rock/ice.
- Leg zippers only go to the knee (a reasonable trade-off for the weight savings).
