The compliment to the Gamma MX jacket this pant is made of Polartec Powershield Lightweight with two Shoeller Dynamic cargo pockets. Shoeller Dynamic is also used on the instep area which incorporates shock cord for a tight fit to the boot. Trim, athletic cut.
The perfect shell pant... and it should be for the price. The Gamma MX soft shell pant is a marvel in sports tailoring. The 4 way stretch Powershield is hands down THE best compromise between protection from the elements and breathability in the soft-shell arena. I use my pants for everything from mountain biking in the winter (at -20 C with a Marmot Dri-clime base layer), to sports gym climbing, to alpine hiking. The cut of the pants (particularily around the crotch) and the stretch allows for some pretty gymnastic moves that you could never accomplish in a hardshell layer. Powershield is in practice probably 80 to 90% as effective as Gore-tex and it probably takes quite a bit of blowing rain to penetrate its discontinuous membrane. I know, I've been caught in flash showers with it and stayed dry. One potential problem might be the re-application of DWR to it since the fabric can't be machine dried like Gore-tex. I haven't noticed a reduction in DWR performance yet but the pants have only been washed 10 times or so. I assume companies like Nikwax have come up with a viable solution to this problem as other softshell materials have similar dilemmas.
Too early to tell but for now, the honeymoon with this product is still GAME ON.
