Grandview Trail

Approach

The best way to reach this trail from Flagstaff is up US 89. Take US 89 to Cameron. Turn left on US 64. Once in the park watch for the Grandview overlook. Park there.

Route Description

The Grandveiw Trail is an old mining trail. The trail is not maintained and is steep. Its length is 3 miles and ends on top of Horseshoe Mesa. There are trails leading down from there that connect to the Tonto Trail. On top of Horseshoe Mesa there is a cave and many Mines. Cave of the Dome is located on the west side of the mesa. It has an opening of only 3 feet and opens up to a 25 foot cavern. There are stalagmites and stalagtites in the cave. Once inside you will see other openings to other caverns. Its quite an experience being inside of it.
There are also quite a few mines to check out. At the end of every mine there are shafts that extend quite a distance down. Horseshoe Mesa was once one of the most mined places in the Grand Canyon.

Essential Gear

In the winter time bring cramp-on cleats if there is snow on the trail. This trail is narrow and steep. Anytime of the year bring lots of water. There is a place to get water down the east side of Horsshoe Mesa in a small creek. Just remember to purify the water.
