Approach
The West Baldy Trail starts at Sheep Crossing Trailhead, located about 3 miles past the Sunrise Ski Resort on forest road 273. There's ample parking here, and the trail is well marked.
Route Description
The West Baldy Trail starts at an elevation of about 9,300 feet. It descends slightly into a meadow, and follows the west fork of the Little Colorado River for a few miles. Then, it enters thick shady ponderosa pine forest where it gradually climbs toward Mount Baldy. It meets the East Baldy Trail at a saddle point near Mount Thomas.
From there, the trail to the summit of Mount Baldy runs about 3/4 mile, but is on reservation land and closed to non-tribal members. You can desend along the same route or continue down the East Baldy Trail to hike the loop.
Essential Gear
No technical equipment required. This is a well marked trail and fairly straightforward.
