The Mountain Speaks :

Shadows on the Wall "Awful Power Clad in Beauty?" (1985)

"I am Tacoma - Monarch of the Coast!

Uncounted ages heaped my shining snows;

The sun by day, by night the starry host.

SILENT SPECTACLECloud-capped from Mount Pleasant (1985)

Crown me with splendor; every breeze that blows

Wafts incense to my altars; never wanes

The glory my adoring children boast.

For one with sun and sea Tacoma reigns.

Last Campfires Never Die! Kautz Glacier near Sunset (1976)

Tacoma - the Great Snow Peak - mighty name

My dusky tribes revered when time was young!

Their God was I in avalanche and flame -

RIDGE of GHOSTSSt. Andrews Lake (1982)

In grove and mead and songs my rivers sung,

As blithe they ran to make the valleys fair -

Their Shrine of Peace where no avenger came

To vex Tacoma, lord of earth and air (enraptured.)"

Living With A Volcano In Your Backyard ???

Rainier in 1896Rainier in the year 1896 (from Eagle Cliff)

Mount Rainier, an active volcano currently at rest between eruptions,
is the HIGHEST peak in the Cascade Range.

Its edifice, capped by snow and 25 glaciers,

has been built up by untold eruptions over the past 500,000 years.

It last erupted in 1894-1895, when small summit explosions were reported

by observers in the Puget Sound (PNW) cities of Seattle and Tacoma.

"Last campfires never die.

And you and I, on separate ways to life's December,

Will always dream by this last campfire,

And have this mountain to remember."

Only You

Only Mr. Carreau could take something like Mt. Rainier and make it a little bit weird. I enjoyed it.

Re: Only You ...

Can make my world seem right.
Only you, can make my darkness bright.
Only you, and you alone,
Can thrill me like you do ... : )

Re: I concur...

Perfectly okay, Bob!

I refer to that as the "free speech syndrome!" Even though I'm
not an 'adminstrator' of this site, I'm ass-suming that we ALL
know what the LIMITS of our freedoms are (indeed).

Hope you're able to make it out to the 'Wild West' again SOON !!

I like it!

Great album! Very interesting. It's very sad to see how much the glaciers have melted in recent years.

Re: I like it!

In my years spent wide-eyed in WA, I never had the chance to
visit the Paradise Ice Caves, which have since "melted out."

I was not trying to make a scientific comparison with the photos;
it's still a beautiful mountain, with the "potential" of becoming
a destructive devil at any moment. Nature will find a way ...

Nice!

Interesting Page! Love the photos, it's always a bit of a bummer to get a look back a few years and see how things have changed. bummer except for the gear!

Re: Nice!

Totally agree! They've really come a long way on the gear!
Seriously, I'm still sad to hear reports of folks losing their
lives in the Wasatch, and other mountain ranges of the world.

But, we all must KEEP movin' down that long and rocky highway!

Question: Who (exactly) are the "TyeDyeTwins." Are they your
neighbors? Just curious - please take care of yourself !! : ))

My love, Mt. Rainier

I am currently selling a house with a view of Mt. Rainier. Having recently left Alaska and now living in Colorado and learning to climb... this made me a bit homesick. I was living in WA when Mt. Rainier blew. The mountain (in any form) is truly a beautiful sight and so awesome to see everyday.

Re: My love, Mt. Rainier

Thanks, we share something in common.

Are you speaking of the 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens ?

I was there, too! I grew up in the shadow of Rainier, and I
miss it "like the dickens" each time I venture outside.

Was your house in Gig Harbor?

I don't have a percentage, but I think "many" folks on this site
are in the process of moving to Colorado. Happy trails & climbs!

I was in Sequim

I was living in a log cabin in Sequim when it blew that Sunday morning! I was just getting ready to move back to AK. (It seems I go back and forth between WA and AK alot, lol). I am from a Native American family originally from Metlakatla, AK (near Ketchikan). However, I most recently lived near Anchorage (Eagle River). So, somehow I am now in Colorado!! Learning to climb from "Big Rob". You might know him from Summit Post.

I will keep an eye out for your pics:)

Re: My Mistake Yes, St. Helens

You are forgiven!

Big Rob = "Robin?" That dude is cool! At least, that's what I gather from some of his posts on SP.

Have you ever visited "Misty Fjords?"

I have a Native American friend here in Arizona, and he worked
at Misty Fjords for three seasons. He said it was totally
opposite from the terrain here in AZ.

Yep, I'd like to visit the PAC-NW again .. perhaps next year!

Re: My Mistake Yes, St. Helens

Yes, "Big Rob" as in Robin:) I never actually went to Misty Fjords but lived in the area (on a boat) and saw much of the similar beauty. And yes, SE AK is totally different terrain than AZ... a lot of muskeg. But then SE AK is a lot different than other areas of the state! It is a huge state and has differing terrains and climate depending on where you are!
I will look forward to you posts:) Cheryl

Re: My Mistake Yes, St. Helens

Agreed that Alaska's a big chunk of land.

Colorado? Just for the summer? Won't you miss the coastal ocean?

Re: Good stuff

Sssssssshh! I was trying to keep that under my hat! !!

Thanks, Courtney. It appears I have (somehow) "alienated" myself
from the Rock Climbing Community here on SP. Go figure ..

Actually, Rock is My Life, and This is My Song ..

Rock on, Courtney!
