Brief Trip Description
Boy was it beautiful, but with the combination of the sun and the hike it was a long, tough four hours and 20 minutes from Paradise to Camp Muir. It probably didn't help that I wearing my plastics and 35 pounds for a possible rematch of Hood next week. But I kept in the front of the pack while my leaders Ben and Anna did a terrific job setting the pace for all of us to get to Camp Muir in 4:15 to 4:30. At all times we stayed in site of each other and they kept a great eye on us. This trip was nothing but positives and with help me with altitude conditioning for other volcanoes.
On the way down Rainier remind us that weather can change in a split second. It went from very sunny to a snowy whiteout at around the 7800 foot level. In fact you could see the cloud as we were decending into them. Amazing but a very good reminder to be prepared for anything on Camp Muir and Rainier. I will remember this experience greatly when I head up Rainier in July.
Luckily with three GPS's, Ben and Anna's experience of this trip and everyone in the group taking there time, this became a none issue. Everyone had the ten essentials and I personally had enough food for three days. We made it down from Camp Muir in three hours and went out to eat at a delicious Mexican Restaurant (Puerto Vallarta).
