The Downlow
Ok, so they are not approach shoes so to speak, but this is the best category for these sandals to fit into. They are by far the most comfortable sandals ever and have more than enough support for off-roading. I use them to approach climbs where there is moderate hiking involved, such as at Shelf Road or North Table mountain. I would not recomend these for scrambling or longer hikes, but for cragging around, these things are perfect and feel great. Plus, it makes putting on rocks shoes much quicker when you are wearing sandals.A bit heavy and pricey, but very very comfortable, dry fast, and great support. Bottom line, these shoes are great and I highly recomend them.

pushing the limits
I now own 4 pairs of Chacos and recommend them to anyone and everyone. It was quite by accident that I figured out I can backpack in them. I did the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island in the summer of 2006 and was having trouble with my feet cramping in my boots so I tried the chacos(Z/2 with the unaweep sole) and they were amazing. After getting my ankles used to it the soles provided more than enough support and my foot felt secure. I now use my chaco as an approach shoe on firm ground (they don't work weel in sand or rocks as the rock/sand get under the straps or your foot.

Really amazing shoes...
I wanted to wait a while before writing a review, to see if anything got worse, but nothing has. I have taken these things everywhere, literally! I love them for approach and use them on multiple mile hikes as well. Very comfortable, I can stay in them all day and not hurt. The only thing that is anoying is if you hike a lot in scree or sand, then the tiny rocks get in between the footbed and your foot, but other than that, these are really great. I used to think they felt heavy when I first bought them, but now do not even notice. I would say these are my first choice of shoes and I wear them at least 90% of the time. I highly recomend these!

Only the greatest
sandals ever created. Approach. Hiking. Hanging around camp. Amphibious assaults. Resole them with Stealth rubber and climb with them to.

My favorite sandals!
I bought my pair in 1991 when they were called Geckos and am still using them. They are due for another resole, but the upper is in great shape. I can't see any reason to buy another pair. I wear them constantly in the summer here in Tahoe, and bring them on backpacking trips to use as my stream-crossing and camp shoe. They are very comfortable and durable. I have the version that wraps around your big toe. I believe this is now called the Z2. I like how this feature holds your foot in place so it's not flopping all over the place or sliding forward when hiking down a steep hill, for example. Whenever they finally wear out, I'll be getting another pair.

Great sandals
They are thick and have great grip and endure over a long day. I have used mine for Class 4 and low 5 climbing with no trouble at all. I think the straps are a pain in the neck to operate, but you get used to them. If you're willing to sacrifice the ankle support from good stiff boots, these things may be all you'll ever want to use again, in warm weather at least.

These sandals are awesome. I wear them all the time with socks. I get made fun of, but these sandals are THE best.
