I agree that this is a great jacket for everyday mountain use. Completely waterproof, weighs almost nothing, and compacts to the size of a coke can. Unless you're going to be rubbing it against sharp granite all day, this shell should perform wonderfully.

As everyone has said this is a great waterproof/breathable that weighs only 12 oz and is very packable. The concern appears to be on the durability of the material. I'm in the industry and what's really neat about this is that Marmot uses a special 40 denier ripstop for the shell that they alone are liscensed to use. Similar jackets by the North Face (the Venture) and others use a 60 denier nylon, but the 40 denier on the Precip is twice as durable and almost half the weight, so its really cool. As for the laminate layer, the silk fiber process they use to make it makes it very breathable (I venture to say more so than Gore-tex) but the laminate is actually more durable on an abrasion test than the nylon shell. Unless its the dead of winter, I may never take my Gore-tex again.

This is an awesome shell.I did a ride in april or may called Mtn Bike Mania ,takes place in Wilson Creek area near Lenoir,NC.Anyways it is raining and a cold front is pushing through.As we gained elevation ,our cycling Jerseys were not cutting it .A number of guys on cross bikes dropped out R/T this.I just threw on my precip and within minutes I was once again comfortable, except for my hands and feet. Did not sweat much even with big efforts. That jacket saved my day and my ride. Light and simple and packs into itself. This jacket most likely would not stand up to abrasion. If you are looking for that I would recommend a traditional shell. Great jacket for 'just in case'.

I LOVE this jacket! For going fast and light, nothing else compares. Although this jacket is not meant for all conditions (sharp rock or branches) it performs beautifully in its element. I can take it with me anywhere because of its feather weight packability. A great all around light rain shell.

Great insurance for going light and fast in the summer, fall, and spring. Nice big pit zips a big plus when going hard in a light rain when you dont want to open the zipper. Something like 12oz. and packs to the size of a softball. Because it is so light I worry about long term durability. I wont bushwack well. Im a little worried about wearing it with a pack. But, time will tell what happens with the material.

A lightweight jacket that does not quite reach the Superlightweigt (sub 300 g) mark.
And the jacket has quite a few flaws, like the baggy nature that seems to follow quite a few US designed jackets. Also the sleeves are a bitg on the baggy side, but still a bit too short for climbing. The hood is also on the smaller side and does not have a good tightening around your head to keep the hood moving with your head. And even though Marmot claims that Precip is waterproof and breathable, it lacks the latter, only keeping the water out (and in).
But on the brighter side the jackek is cheap, quite light, and basicly a no frills waterproof only to be used when the weather gets crappy.
Still there are better jackets for even a bit technical stuff other than walking in the city, but almost all of the better ones either cost atleast double compared to Precip or are hard to accuire.

Like this jacket very much. Lightweight and breathable. It is waterproof and packs well enough for me. Big improvement over the gortex shells I used to use. Price was right.
Like the others I am not sure how long it will last with a pack on my back. But so far I like it. One point for me was that the arms were long enough. I had to use a small for a short time due to out of stock where I bought it (Canmore), The arms were still long enough. Worked well enough for me before I purchased a large when they got them and gave the small to my wife.

This jacket does the job of keeping the wind and rain off. One complaint is the sizing - I had to buy a large to get the right sleeve length and torso length. However, with the large you could fit two of me into the jacket - it's that fat! Thus in the wind without a pack to keep it strapped down it flaps around on my body.

I bought this jacket for a light weight rain/wind jacket for backpacking. In the desire to get lighter and lighter on mountain climbs, this jacket has made it way into my pack on several mountain climbs up to 14K. It has been excellent on all of them. A great "throw it in your pack and forget it jacket". I've used it on rock and snow climbs without any problems.
With it's light weight, I wouldn't trust it to rub up against abrasive objects all day long, but I don't worry about it either if it does occasionally.

A great lightweight jacket that works well as an emergency wind/rain shell while hiking or out on the rock. Great fitting without imparing movement.
I also am not sure of the durability with extended use with a backpack or abrasive sports like rock and ice climbing. I also haven't used it in huge downpours.
As preveiously stated the price is right, if I get what I pay for them I'll be happy.

Far too many five star ratings for my taste on this product. While it is a very good peice of gear and is priced well it is not the end all be all of rain gear.
I have used this shell in a staggering down pour and it did fine keeping me more or less dry but not perfect. However if I am working hard it does not breath well enough to keep me from wetting the inside of the jacket out.
As time has gone on the shoulders seem to be holding up well enough but I think I have started to detect some moisture sneaking through. I guess the next down pour will tell.
UPDATE: After a year this jacket is now soaking through during heavy rain. I no longer consider this jacket water proof and think of it water resistant. I have put very few miles on the jacket and it should not be soaking through over the arms and back like it is. My girl friends that has seen even less use soaked through as well during the same rain storm. Thress stars now.

This shell was reasonably priced at $100. I especially like the zipped pits and its superlight compact design. The jacket has also proven effective at keeping dry. However, the pockets leave a little to be desired - they are thin mesh and they sag very low when heavy objects are in them. Otherwise, this jacket makes a great summer rain shell for climbing, hiking, and backpacking.

This has been a great jacket for me. I have a family of six so from a budget standpoint I try to purchase items that I can use in multiple ways. I wanted a light wind/rain jacket to use in normal temps that I could also use as a wind/rain top layer in cold temps. I noticed that some reviewers did not like the roomy nature of this jacket. I love this because it fits very comfortably when I have one or two layers of fleece along with my base layers. Yet I can still use it in warmer temps as a wind/rain jacket and do not get overheated.
I have had this jacket for a couple years and it seems to be holding up fine. I have been in multiple rain storms and a few ice, sleet, and snow storms and it has kept me dry through them all.
I bought another one for my wife last year. Hope this review helps

I liked the loose fit as my small daypack can be worn under the jacket. The jacket doesn't not breathe real well when working hard during uphill hiking or running. Works great for summer mountain hiking as the rain usual happens on the way down when you are not generating as much moisture.
Overall a good price for the results! I liked it enough that I bought one for my wife.

In case
This is a good "in case it rains" shell. Even with the pit zips, I find the breathability to be so-so (compared to much more expensive gore-tex types)
for the money though it is a really great rain jacket/shell and very packable

I've worn mine out
I've had a precip jacket for 4 or 5 years and have worn it a lot, including around town during rainy weather.
I like it except it has worn out; the coating on the inside of the neck and shoulders is starting to go. Also, the mesh pockets have developed holes. However, for $100 I've gotten a lot of use out of it.
I will probably replace it.

Great rain jacket
Excellent, keeps the water out and is somewhat breathable. I would recommend it unless you want to spend lots of money on rainwear.

The Good -
Coat is light and great at shedding wind. The hood, when drawn, fits snug and will turn with your head. Wore this jacket with a mid and base layer in 2 straight days of 50-100 mph winds and rains on a Presidential Traverse and as long as I was moving I kept warm and reasonably dry.
The bad -
If it is raining and you are sweating the moisture stays in.

Pretty Good, A Little Clammy
This is a good jacket if you want a light, waterproof shell. I really like that I can pack it into it's own pocket and put that in one of my pants pockets. It does have it's drawbacks. All the velcro quickly saturates with water. It would be great if the underarm zippers had pulls to make them easier to zip. The elastic drawstrings can really get in the way when you're wearing other clothing underneath. I don't think the coating does a very good job for the clamminess and the breathability is not very good.

Untitled ReviewLimitations: Not a jacket to wear on hikes or climbs that might see a lot of bushwacking or rock/ice abrasion. Also not really intended for severe mountain or winter weather.
I give the PriCip 5 stars because of it's weight, low cost and good performance for its intended use. If you're looking for one shell that does everything this only rates 3 or 4 stars.
