Apex 1 Jacket

So far, I'm a huge fan of softshell clothing. Mind you, however, that I haven't tested these shells in a deluge. I don't expect them to keep out serious ran, and, for that reason, I always pack a waterproof/breathable shell in addition to the soft shell.



The Apex jacket is very light weight and breathable, yet it does an excellent job of keeping the wind out. I found that this jacket, worn over a Patagonia lightweight underwear top, was an excellent combination for summer climbs in the Rockies. I could easily regulate the temperature by zipping the jacket up or down.

It is also very rugged and abrasion resistant. It will definitely hold up to a squeeze chimney.



I did test the Jacket by dumping water on it, and it did an excellent job repelling.

I use this thing for everything, I ski in it, climb in it, and in general have abused the hell out of it, still looks like I just got it.



Holds up to abuse very well, keeps the wind out and is fine for snow and an afternoon thunderstorm but don't expect it to keep you totally dry, rain will soak it after some time.



Good wind protection and warm enough if your moving but it isn't really a warm layer

Softshell is the way to go. There aren't many routes where you need to wear hard shells now a days (unless of course your at high altitude). This softshell is warm enough when your on the move and gives great freedom of movement. I've spent long days ice climbing in this, and it doesn't let the water through.

Pro:

-Very breathable

-Abrasion Resistant

-Big pockets on the inside (for maps)



Con:

-Too short, the jacket doesn't stay put beneat a harness or if you lift your arms.

-No double zipper.

-Waterresistant only as long as the impregnation lasts, you can however treat it with Nikwax waterproofing.

I believe this is just a newer version and it is wonderful. Breathes well, does well with rain/snow, lightweight and warm. Excellent shell.

I have 2 Apex jackets and they're by far my favorite winter BC ski and touring jackets. Breathability is excellent and they shed snow and light moisture very well. I have a lighter Apex that I use as a mid layer, and it doubles as an outer during heavy exertion. The material is extremely light, tuff, packable, and dries quickly.
