The Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man jacket is an absolute MUST for winter backcountry enthusiasts, and a great-looking alternative to the run-of-the-mill fleece jackets you see everyday. In fact, it’s one of the most unique, technical and attractive fleeces around. Made with Polartec Thermal Pro High Loft, the Monkey Man’s fleece, affectionately known as Monkey Phur, is more plush and shaggy than the common standard. It makes you warm just looking at it. That said, the Monkey Man is ironically much lighter than comparable fleece jackets, which brings us to its technical side. It’s perfect for those concerned with insulating efficiency, i.e., most warmth per weight, and compressibility (packs well). When you hold the Monkey Man up to the sun, you’ll see its noticeably open structure, dots of light poking through. It’s SUPER breathable, so when you’re skinning up the mountain quickly on a cold, bluebird day, you won’t overheat and have to shed layers. Polartec Power Stretch cuffs and waist afford excellent freedom of movement, as well. Its insulative depth, great breathability, and extremely light weight prompted Everest guru, Ed Viesturs, to bring a Monkey Man Jacket on his last Annapurna trip. Obviously not windproof, the Monkey Man will be chilly in biting (East Coast) winds. Just throw on a weatherproof shell, and you have a layering system that’s tough to beat.

Ohh boy, is this a warm jacket! It offers excellent weight to warmth ratio and feels really comfy. With a shell jacket on top you won't get cold anytime soon. Used it with a baselayer and shelljacket to -32 celsius without getting cold.

+ Warmth to weight ratio

- No drawstring at the waist/bottom so it doesn't sit tight there... Will have to make one myself!

Positive: Very warm, very breathable, no pilling, for all my '05 winter trips (ie: Ritter, San Gorgonio, and Rock Creek) this fleece plus a synthetic down jacket have sufficed, stays warm in light rain from long hair fleece!

Negative: Too warm during lighter, warmer weather, very breathable (not good for only layer in high wind and cold).

A short story to describe my unwillingness to part with it: After a month of owning it, a wrist stitching started to come undone. I returned it at REI for credit and went to look for another. When I noticed they had no more in stock, I reexchanged the credit slip for the fleece. FYI: I hav had this for 4 months after this, and planty of uses later, and the stitching hasn't deteriorated any more!

very light and breathable, good for climbing as a light insulation, packs small.

Good jacket! I wore holes in mine.

Likes: breatheable, very warm, good looking, fits great

Dislikes: rather heavy for backpacking or multi-day climbing trips. IMHO, it is more suitable for day hikes or car camping.

Great Jacket
This fleece rocks my socks! It's very lightweight and extremely breathable. Highly recommend as a mid-layer on any winter outing. It's very warm, very light, very comfortable, and also very good-looking. If you have this under a shell you can easily stay warm in temperatures in excess of 0 to -10 deg. F. I wore just this fleece over a t-shirt the other day in a mild snow storm and temps. of 5 deg. F and i was almost on the verge of beginning to sweat. So give it a try if you're in the market for a good lightweight fleece, you won't be disappointed.

Warm
+ comfortable, warm, lightweight, breathable, hand warming pockets and chest pocket.

- no wind resistance but they clearly state that in the description.

Great for hiking when the temperatures drop.

I have really gotten into the swing of this being one of my key pieces of gear for high/cold Colorado winter hikes. I will wear it with a light windbreaker and it keeps me warm well below freezing. Skipping the windbreaker allows it to breath very well and keeps me from overheating. It is a bit bulky to pack though, small trade for the pros IMO.

Main advantage: warm to weight ratio. Compressible, pleasant to wear, great fit.
