Part of the family now
Ive had this jacket for years now. I cant say if the new version is better. But if it is it will be a good coat.
I find the jacket very durable, its taken plenty of wear, i look after it, but its lasted, and does the job. As already said, it doesnt pack up as light as some newer jackets. But the cut, and the performence is OK in my book.I love it.

After two
For sheer durability I cannot fault this jacket. I have had two, the first one I bought around 1998 and quite simply wore it out. It had two years of daily student use in North Wales with the addition of rucksacks every weekends, after three years the grey lining inside the back had worn off and you could see the red shell through and it started to wet out in various places such as the neck and down the front. TNF replaced it with a new one, with no quibbles at all. The second one has not had the use of the first and I still use it today. With use I have come across a few downsides. The peak of the hood is useless and even with a helmet on its not much better. In snow and ice the velcro will clog up if not kept secure. It is a very noisy jacket to wear, but then most shells of its day were too. Its inability to pack down is annoying but not inconvenient. If it was still available today I probably wouldn't buy it again.

Untitled ReviewThe only think that I don't like about it (which is also probably true of all 3 layer goretex) is that it packs bulky. I'm also wondering whether the new stretch goretex and other lightweight goretex jackets will displace this one.
I would still, however, highly recommend it and would probably seriously consider buying it again if I had the chance.
