I am in the process of selecting a trekking peak destination in Nepal for October, 2002. Your information is very interesting. I am also considering Island Peak - any thoughts?

Thanks for your comments on my web page. My thoughts on Island vs. Mera, for what they are worth:

Mera is technically easier than Island, in fact almost too easy. But its location in a remote wilderness setting was what appealed to me.

Island sees a lot more people since the teahouse trek route goes up to its base.

The best plan, if you have time, would be to do the circuit trek mentioned, then attempt Island after you cross the Amphu Labsa. You walk right under it, you'll be well acclimatized. If the weather is good it would only mean two extra days.

Maybe we'll cross paths in October. I'm planning a return to the area, crossing the high passes from Makalu base camp.
