Lomseggen

Overview

Lomseggen is a beautiful summit in  Breheimen National Park above Lom (Norway).    While the peak appears to be the dominating mountain that rises directly above Lom, once you are on top it can be seen that Lomseggen is more of a subpeak of higher mountains (namely Eggjapiken [1524 meters] and Storivilen [2068 meters]).

The views from the summit are fantastic and include the highest mountain in Norway, Galdhøpiggen.  From the summit, much of Jotunheimen, Reinheimen, and Rondane National Parks can be seen.   Below you will be the city of Lom and the Bøverdalen valley.

The trailheads to Lomseggen are very easy to reach making this an accessible mountain to anyone visiting the Lom area.

In addition to Lomseggen itself, the area has many other attractions as well, including the picturesque 900 year old church known as Lom stavkyrkje.

Getting There

Getting to Lom is easy and the climb can be started right from town.

Via Train and Bus

No trains go to Lom, but you can ride the train to Otta, which is less than an hour away via bus.  Train service to Otta is very convenient and trains even leave directly form the aiport in Oslo and also from Bergen and Trondeim.  For schedules and tickets, see the VY or En-Tur websites.    

Via Bus

With 6 daily departures from Oslo, as well several daily departures from Gardermoen. Valdresekspressen has six daily departures from Oslo to Lom.  Øst-VestXpressen operates buses in both directions from Bergen to Lillehammer through Fagernes with a connection to Lom. Fjordekspressen has departures from Bergen to Trondheim, stopping in Lom.

Routes Overview

There are several routes available.  Before the climb, I'd recommend stopping at the Tourist Office in Lom as they give out free maps.

Lomseggen Trail

This is the most popular route on the mountain.  To find the trail from the roundabout at the center of Lom, cross the bridge over the Bøvre River and walk past the Norwegian Mountain and them up the road past the Storstabburet (Big Barn).  Continue straight to the Solsidevegen road.    The trail to the summit of Lomseggen is 200 meters after teh Sygard Andvord farm and is on the right side of the road.     The trail to Lomseggen has yellow trail markers.

The trail climbs steeply to the summit of Lomseggen, passing the picturesque Smith hytta stone hut (1150 meters elevation and just above timberline) along the way.  The scenery is really beautiful the entire way. 

From the summit you can return the same way or descend the steeper Kvilarsteinen Trail which also begins in Lom.  I'd suggest using this as a descent route as the beginning of the trail is harder to find in Lom and because the trail is steeper than the Lomseggen Route.  

Expect to take most of a day for this loop hike.  

Nissegården Via Ferrata Route

This technical via ferrata route begins at Nissegården and heads directly up the mountain.   The Nissegården Lodge provides guides and information.  

Onwards from Lomseggen

If Lomseggen is not enough for you, from the summit you can follow the ridges to the higher peaks of Eggjapiken (1524 meters) and Storivilen (2068 meters).

Red Tape

There is no red tape here so please take care of the place.

When to Climb

Most people climb this peak in summer (especially in July and August), though skiing it in winter is possible too.   Be aware that some parts of the routes have avalanche danger though.  

Mid-July through August are the most popular times in Lom and on the trails.   Late June to early July and early September are pleasant times to visit since there aren't quite as many people and the weather and conditions are usually good.

Camping

There are many places to camp in Lom.  At least two of the hotels allow camping at their facilities. 

There is also a large campground known as Lom Camping on the edge of town.  

Nissegården Lodge  has camping as well.
