Huntington Ravine Ramp

Overview

This is one of the ways of getting from the bottom of Huntington Ravine to the Alpine Garden in the winter that doesn't involve any technical climbing. This improvised route, which is not mentioned in any guidebook that I've seen, ascends a series of snow-covered ramps and shallow gullies between South Gully and Odell's Gully. Parts of it are sometimes used as an escape route from the middle section of Odell's Gully, or as an alternative descent from the Garden.

Getting There

Approach as for all the Huntington Ravine winter climbs. Once at the base of Huntington Ravine, begin ascending left, as if for South Gully, heading for the cone-shaped slope just below the entrance to South Gully proper.

Route Description

Once at the entrance to South Gully, instead of climbing staight up into the gully, climb right instead, following a moderately-angled ramp (with small trees sticking out of it) for about a hundred meters, until you reach broken rock. Now, turn left, following a shallow snow gully system (also with some small trees). Some steep snow (about 45 degrees) will be encountered here, and in very hard conditions a rope and some pickets may be advisable. Once past the steepest section, follow one of the several gullies all the way to the Alpine Garden.

Essential Gear

Ice axe and crampons; rope and pickets if it's very icy.
