Drove in on Thursday night and there was a lot of thunder, lightning, hail, and a bit of snow. We hiked in Friday morning and met LOADS of folks coming down off the mountain who got thrashed by the storm. Met one woman who was forced to spend the night in the Whitney summit shelter after doing the Mountaineers route. She said she was PRAYING HARD that the lightning would not strike the metal roof. We spent the night at Iceburg Lake and could see the upper 3 or 4 pitches from that vantage point. When we approached the climb in the morning, we crossed over the Whitney-Russell col. At that moment, we saw the entire arête. The FishHook Arête itself is absolutely striking. Climbing was varied and the rock was of excellent quality. I highly recommend this Sierra classic.
