Approach

This route is typically done in conjuction with a summit of Belford first and that is how I describe it here. From the Missouri Gulch TH to Mt. Belford's summit to Mt. Oxford and back is quoted as 11 miles and 5,,900 feet round trip by Roach.

Route Description

From Mt. Belford's summit (14,197 ft) Mt. Oxford and the connecting saddle are visible to the east.

Begin by descening along the ridge southeast to about 14,080 feet. At this point turn east and descend to the 13,500 ft saddle between the two mountains. There is some interesting class 2 in this steep section.

From the saddle the trail eases and climbs 653 feet to the summit.

Return the same way.

Essential Gear

This dayhike is a long haul so review your standard hiking kit before starting out. Maybe some extra batteries for that headlamp or more mole skin is in order.

Winter hikers will want snowshoes and poles of course.

Elkhead Basin makes a great base camp and allows this big day to be a bit more reasonable. If so you will need your backpacking overnight gear. Watch out for those marmots. Be sure to urinate away from camp and on a rock so they don't tear things up for your salt.

Miscellaneous Info

If you have information about this route that doesn't pertain to any of the other sections, please add it here.

Parents

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
