Approach

From Pont Valsavarenche, or, when road for Nivolet pass is open (see main page "Getting there" section, Ceresole Reale, Col del Nivolet road) for further details.

Route Description

From big park in Pont, follow trail no. 3 to Croce d'Arolley (2.310 m. - 1h00m): this characteristic cross delimits Nivolet highland. The "Piano di Nivolet" must be crossed completely: ignore the unpaved road visible on right side and continue on the same trail. After about 4,5 km Nivolet lakes are reached (2.526 m. - 2h30m).

From this point (parking close to lakes) the route is the same coming from Ceresole Reale - Nivolet pass paved road.

From Savoia Hut, follow trail (crwoded when road is open) to Rosset lake (2.730 m. - 3h00min/0h30min). Keep on walking leaving Rosset lake on the left, and head to Leynir Pass.

After a regular steep on green grass, facing over Tre Becchi lakes, the trail enter into a kind of desert place. After a little descent just below Punta di Bes, with easy travers, on brown sand, Leynir Pass is at your feet (3.084 m. - 4h15min/1h45min).

Common route (Valsavarenche, Val di Rhêmes and Nivolet pass)

From Leynir pass, enter for a few meters into Val di Rhêmes, then follow difficult traces on a very steep rock jump. Here it is the only difficult passage: a simple climb with hands helps to pass it. After this little thrill, take a big breath and head for northern (NW) summit, at the opposite side of the steep plateau. From this point there will never be any other dangerous passages.
To make more interesting the final rise, it is possible to scramble (never exposed, never dangerous) on NE ridge, toward SE summit. Great sightseen on Nivolet's region lakes. Very impressive the ridge from SE to NW summits: Gran Paradiso and Mont Blanc are guest star of this awesome moment. On NE, straight down, Aouille glacier. All is wonderful.

Essential Gear

Alpin clothes and boots.
