Overview

The Trench Connection route is one of four routes on the north side of formation called Crow's Nest. Crow's Nest is one of several areas that can be visited by traveling South on the Geology Tour Road. The areas along the Geology Tour Road are not quite as busy on weekends as some of the close to the road areas and at times offer a bit more solitude.

Getting There

The Geology Tour Road heads south from Sheep's Pass Loop Road approximately 2.5 miles east of Sheep Pass Group Campground. If you stop at the Pullout # 3 along this Geology Tour Road and walk W to slightly NW, in about 10 minutes you'll reach Crow's Nest. It is part of a larger area called Towers of Uncertainty. On the North side of Crow's Nest are four routes, all suitable for someone just starting to trad lead.

Route Description

Trench Connection is the harder of the four routes on the North Face of Crow's Nest and the best route as well. As you face the north side of the formation, the routes starting from the right are: Eating Crow, 5.5, Crow's Nest, 5.4, No Strings Attached, 5.6 and Trench Connection, 5.7. All the routes accept good pro and can be lead safely. Please note that the difficulties and names are mismatched in Randy Vogel's J Tree Guide! The Trench Connection (the leftmost route) is very esthetic and clean climb up a wide, smooth chimney with great protection possibilities. To descend the formation, walk West along the summit ridge and downclimb easy third class ledges to the ground. Recommended.

Essential Gear

Regular rack with wires and SLCDs and at least a 50m rope are needed.
