Timpooneke trail Hike

A perfect day for the hike

Every once in a while you get a perfect day in the mountains. Weather, bugs (no bugs actually), and temperature all come together to just make it a day to remember. SP member MikerHiker and I had one of those days on July 14th which helped to make up for another day a couple weeks earlier when we thought we had been thrust back into winter on a peak in northern Utah.

The Timpooneke Trail is one of the two main trails that most hikers use to access the summit of Mt. Timpanogos and it generally has few hikers on it as compared to the Aspen Grove trail which snakes up from the east side of the mountain. This album is a collection of the pics we took and we'll add to it as we have the time. (Mike, please feel free to add your pics here)

We started at 6:30 a.m. and reached the summit just a bit after 11 a.m. but our GPS indicator was that we had an actual moving time of 4 hours for our time up which is understandable when you consider the number of times we stopped to take pictures, talk with other hikers and just otherwise enjoy the experience. I might add that we saw two big moose about part way up as well as several deer. The moose entertained us for about 15 minutes before they moved into some trees. Unfortunately, the morning light kept us from getting pics that were truly decent but I've attached one in this album. A group of mountain goats were part of the entertainment on the way down as they passed just below us as we were going back down across the high snowfield. We spent an enjoyable amount of time on the summit, and then headed back down, opting not to do the glacier down on this trip. We had a chance to dodge about 50 trail runners and some large piles of horsey stuff on the way down (I wonder if the trail runners avoided stepping in that stuff) and arrived none the worse for wear at our vehicle. A nice 14-15 mile day and hiking with Mike is always a pleasure.

Re: Thanks for the report and pics

You were kind of my inspiration for it Kathy. As soon as I heard you were heading for Timp (via Dennis), I decided to put this album together as it would give you a feel for the trail and mountain. There is a charge for parking at the trailhead and a charge to get into American Fork canyon. The latter charge is not a problem generally if you get there before 6:30 or so. Have fun and I hope you have a great hike. I'll be in Idaho with Dennis on the 22nd.

Parents

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
