High on my wish list.
Mount Tobin in Nevada had been on my "wish" list for quite a while. Finally, Eric Kassam, Al Sandorff and I got together and were able to get this one checked off. The nice thing about Tobin is that it is the 12th most prominent peak in Nevada with over 4800 feet of prominence. We used the Dennis Poulin information found on peakbagger.com to get close and from where I managed to drive to, it was a reasonable hike but the drive in had some white knuckle moments thanks to the steepness of the road and some "hood and sky" stuff. I don't have any pics to share of the road since I was too busy driving and making decisions but the first hill was the crux. Make it up that and you could drive a couple miles closer. The last crux was the final hill, I had to creep up it and down it in lo-lo gear but I managed to drive as far as Dennis did, stopping at the 8682 point he mentions. From there it was a drop of about 150 feet and then we just followed the grassy track to the 9000 foot level where it ended and just headed directly up to the summit from there. Eric picked a slightly different route up than Al and I did but we all met at the summit. I had the misfortune of inhaling a moth while on my way up and that is an experience I do not ever want to repeat.A register was found and the three of us enjoyed the views before heading back down. This was a great mountain to bag together and enjoy each others company on. Hiking solo sucks because you can't turn to someone else and say "wow, look at that view". If you ever decide to do this one, study the maps and the nice description provided by Dennis on peakbagger. com.
The pics I have included are a reminder to me of this mountain. For Eric and I, it was the 23rd out of 24 Nevada prominence peaks that have over 4000' of prominence. My remaining one is Current Peak near Ely Nevada and I hope to get that one this summer.
