Overview
Another one of Orient Bay's Classic Climbs, Tears of Joy is a WI3+ to WI4 climb (depending on what kind of shape the climb is in) located near the west end of the Orient Bay ice climbing splendor. First Ascent: Shaun Parent, Paul Dedi, 1983.
Getting There
Towards the west end of the Orient Bay climbing area just before Starquake. Parking is just o.k. on the shoulder of the highway once over the hill from Sycho Icycho. It may be in your best interest to park nearer the bend in the highway as to give the traffic some time to adjust to the cars parked on the shoulder. Follow the fairly direct trail through the woods and up to the base of the climb.
Route Description
Tears of Joy is a WI3+ to WI4 climb (depending on what kind of shape the climb is in) located near the west end of the Orient Bay ice climbing splendor. The total time needed including the approach is about 4 hours. The lower half of this climb is about 30m at WI3 to WI3+ and the upper half is about 40m at WI3+ to WI4. There is an alpine feel in the middle of the two sections for about 10 vertical meters total where the angle gets down to about 45 degrees and the snow can get pretty deep. Look for a tree to belay off of for the second after both the first and second pitches. Another Orient Bay classic.
Essential Gear
All essential gear needed for multi-pitch ice. Drag another rope or use twin ropes for a clean 2 rap descent.
