Use the chair lift to Tarscher Alm to cut short 750m, of ascent. From the top station follow trail No 15 which leads around Zirmraun Hütte and then crosses the Vinschgau southern slopes at approximately the same elevation. The route offers great views into Vinschgau / Val Venosta and to the Saldurkamm Ridge of the Ötztal Alps to the north. It heads for a northern side summit of Hoher Dieb / Gran Ladro.

There you get a first view of Kofelraster Seen / Laghi dell Covolo. Now there are two possibilities to reach Hoher Dieb: Descend 100m to the lakes and re-ascend directly to the summit or hike the ridge southward until you reach Hoher Dieb. Since the lakes are the most popular destination in the area most visitors follow the former route. The ridge traverse therefore is always rather solitary.
