verdi

I've just gotta ask if it was worth it. My wife and I have climbed some manky stuff, but she would never go there.

Re: verdi

Darin, now that it's done I'd say it was worth it....in reality though I think we've stuck our necks out on this chosspile (20 parties on top versus 2 deaths is sobering stat's). Total nightmare of a climb - no redeeming values other than bagging a historical summit & what is likely one of the worst summits in Oregon. I'm happy we don't ever have to go back. Thanks for visiting!

PS the thing is falling apart - constant rockfall.

Do you remember when....

....we talked about me jugging up after you and taking photos in 2005 when you were going to do this? Well, after reading this, I'm kinda glad that never happened. ;- ) Nice job on this heap of junk. Great TR.

Re: Do you remember when....

Brian, I think that was later than '05 since after that we went & did Pillars of Herc. that day I think.

Thanks for good words Sir!

Re: Do you remember when....

Brian, I double checked - yeah, that was back in Feb. of 2006....been obsessed by this thing for a long time now (think I'm cured now :)
Thanks again for checking out this bs.

Re: Do you remember when....

Pet Blondie for me, that eye looks painful. (BTW, really cool photos on this. Great perspective. I've seen similar rock all over like this and never ever thought to actually climb it. You rock, man. Pun intended.)

Re: Do you remember when....

will do - Blondie's been on a steady diet of doggie ice cream that she enjoys and therefore seems to speed her healing process :)

"I've seen similar rock all over like this and never ever thought to actually climb it. "

ummmmmm --- yeah (never seen Mr. Jenkins climbing oregon choss...right!)

Re: Great TR!

Thank you very much Jonathan!
"Who would? They'd have to be total loons!"
lots of loons (not us) on that thing - 20 ascents (at least) prior to ours including those who've done it 2 or 3 times!!! You should see what the 2nd ascent party climbed with - home-made pitons and biners....that's ba..sy stuff :)

He, he ...

It says here in Beckey's book that the Fifes Peaks group is a
complicated cluster of spectacular andesite outcrops and towers.
(It's not good to retire. You gotta keep movin'!) Geez, sorry to
hear about that manky stuff, and Blondie's episode with the YJ.
Is doggie ice cream the same as human ice cream?? I need to try
some doggie ice cream sometime. It sounds delicious! My all-time
favourite is TUTY-FRUITY. Nice TR, Radek and Shirley & Blondie!!

"It's not good to retire. You gotta keep movin'!"

just from this loose choss climbing - it's not good to be dead :)

Not sure about doggie ice cream? Will sample it tonight now that you mention it, I know it comes in "original" and "peanutbutter" flavors. I've tried Blondie's other foods but not the ice cream (yet). Will report back on my findings tomorrow :)

Thanks for checking this stuff out Larry.
Cheers!

Re: Great Job

thank you very much. when we first hiked up there in '05, I had a "screw this!" kinda moment. But then it just got into my head & I kept thiking about it (obessing really). Couldn't work up the nerve to go back for 3 years.

Carful - the dome can get under your skin that way ;)

Re: Great Job

K., it's not bad at all. We did this like 4?? years ago and I don't recall any fear on either Old Man or Old Woman. I think the runout is on 4th class start mostly, when it gets steeper you get some pro (fixed or cams - don't recall anymore) and then you're pretty much on the summit. Both cool looking spires with well protected routes & reasonably sound rock. Enjoy (hopefully get some better pic's & post them).

Congrats

Found your report while digging up info on Little Cougar.

Congrats for getting up AND off this thing...the rock is appalling bad, as a partner and I discovered in 1975 when we gave it a go. I recall finding spikes that the pioneers used to pry off loose rock. We somehow bailed off the first pitch and climbed Little St. Peters Dome as a consolation prize. I never wanted to go back.

Re: Congrats

Thank you very much RB. I don't know if you have any interest in this but Jeff Thomas is planning on rewriting an article that recently came out on history of the Dome (as more info. came to light following our outing). I believe he'd like to include people who've made a go at the Dome. If you do have interest, please contact him at MAzamas in portland or shoot me an email.
I never want to go back to this thing either - no redeeming qualities.
Regards,
Radek

PS I believe Jeff would "kill" to see those spikes you mention or to see photos of them (climbing history is his passion). I would very much love to see them too.
