Approach

This route is an alternative to the standard route from the north, and about the same difficulty. Start in Winfield, 12 miles west from US 24 on Clear Creek road (dirt). You can camp here for free and there is even an outhouse.

Route Description

From Winfield hike WNW on North Clear Creek road (4WD) 1.2 mi, then turn right on another jeep road which turns to trail. Follow the trail N to treeline and through marshes where you will definitely get your feet wet and muddy.

This route follows Roach's Colorado's Fourteeners 11.3, except that the route shown is incorrect. At the mouth of the stream at 12,000 feet, Roach's map shows the route continuing NNE to a ridge at 13,200 ft, but the well defined trail actually goes NW to a lower saddle at 12,800 ft. From this saddle, climb tundra and rocks NE to the summit. Pay attention here so you can find your way back down.

Essential Gear

Standard hiking stuff (summer).

Route Comment

I've posted a sequence of photos -- numbered (1) to (9) -- with captions that describe the SW Ridge route in more detail.

(The upload places these in "reverse" order, so if you start with #1, which is the shot of the trail through the forest, and then use the PREV button, you can see them in proper sequence.)

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
