Approach

From the Phelps Creek trailhead hike the five miles to the very popular Spider Meadows. There are many camps in and around the meadows. Continue upstream into the trees above the meadows. Take the left fork at the junction between the Spider Gap trail and the lesser-used trail to the upper Phelps Creek basin. This trail ascends steeply toward the Spider Gap cross-country route.

Route Description

There are a number of places where the south and east slopes of Point 8134 can be accessed from the Spider Gap route. Ascend the snow and talus towards the south face of Point 8134, which may be snow or scree. As you approach the summit keep right go to the east shoulder, then up the east face to the summit. The southernmost peak is the summit.

If you wish to summit Red Mountain from the Phelps Creek side, it appears that there would be a route south from the Red-Point 8134 saddle by dropping west from the saddle and traversing south on the west slopes of Red's north ridge, then ascending to the summit after passing the cliffs south of the saddle.

Essential Gear

While there is snow on this route an ice axe is essential. There is chance of rockfall on the summit block, so a helmet may be desirable.
