Approach

Follow the directions on the main page under "Getting There" to reach Crater Lake at the base of the mountain. From there, the summit is approximately 1 hour of climbing away (and c. 1500 feet of elevation gain).

Route Description

From the northern shore of Crater Lake, take a cross country heading NW directly up the gentle (and sparsely forested) slope. As you get higher and leave timberline behind, the slope becomes scree covered. Continue heading uphill traversing slightly northward (right). This heading will soon bring you to the top of Krag Peak's Southeast Ridge.

Once on the ridge, follow it (roughly NW) keeping mostly to the ridge top proper (occassionally skirting difficult terrain to left or right of the ridge top). When the ridge turns north (right) and becomes vague, scramble up the (loose!) south face of Krag Peak to its summit. From the summit, you'll see two other formations: the "north peak" and the "northeast peak" (both lower than the highpoint you're on). Total time from Crater Lake to summit is about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Retrace your steps on descent.

Essential Gear

Hiking boots and possibly hiking poles are all that you'll need under dry conditions. With snow present, ice ax and crampons are highly recommended.

Would go NE first

I followed the route as described and almost got cliffed out. Ended up on some very loose Class 3-4 dirt and scree ledges above Crater Lake. I'd suggest first going NE from Crater Lake and getting around the big white granite cliff on the right (east) before heading up NW. The going is much more gentle without and exposure. I'll post a beta photo too.

Re: Would go NE first

Yes. That is the route described in "75 Scrambles in Oregon". Go directly north (on trail) from north end of Crater Lake for about 1/2 mile, then head west up (class 2 scramble on easy talus) up to the cirque on Krag Peak) and then head up to the ridge from there.
