Approach

Drive from Togue Pond to Roaring Brook a distance of 8 miles on an unimproved 15 mph gravel road

Route Description

Park your car at Roaring Brook Campground. Leave note of your hike on the rangers' clip board and they will let you climb on their mountain. Follow blue blazed trail from Roaring Brook at 1480 ft. toward South Turner. At .2 miles Russell pond trail bears left and you continue straight toward Sandy Stream Pond. At .4 miles cross the outlets of Sandy Stream Pond at the southeast corner of the pond. Kind of wet and muddy here sometimes but hop across logs. A number of paths lead through the woods to the bushy and bouldery shore of Sandy Stream Pond with its many moose.
The best of these lands you at a popular boulder with outstanding views including South Turner Mtn. Continue on the blue blazed trail taking care to avoid the left branch which goes to Whidden pond. You continue on the right branch which by now is ascending the mountain. Enter a boulder field at .9 miles and start climbing steeply at 1.1 miles. At 1.5 miles there is a fairly reliable spring on the right hand side. Continue up and arrive at the summit rocks at 1.8 miles. Scramble class 3 the remaining bit till on top at 2 miles 3130 feet. Enjoy view.
