Approach

The trailhead is close to Malga Crocifisso in Val di San Nicolo. The valley can be reached from Val di Fassa by turning east at Pozza di Fassa. Right after the Malga turn right (south-east) into Valle dei Monzoni. After 500m the road ends in a parking lot from where you can take advantage of a shuttle service to Malga Monzoni.

Route Description

Vallaccia Group seen from Passo le Selle. The ascent route described here does a counter clockwise half circle from the right. Sas da le Dodesc is the flat summit in front of the double peak of Punta della Vallaccia and Sas de la Luna.

  • General data
      - Start altitude: 1552m
      - Summit altitude: 2550m
      - Prevailing exposition: south, later west
      - Type: 3h on dirt roads and trails, trailless near the summit
      - Protection: Easy unexposed hike
  • Effort: 1200m gain in elevation
  • Power: 1 - easy
  • Psyche: 1 - Some exposed spots close to the summit. Vertical drops into Vallaccia from the summit itself.

This is the sane way to reach both Sas da le Undesc as well as Punta della Vallaccia. There also is an "insane" one too and guess which one we took. Since it poses no problems the route actually is rather popular and the abundance of Refuges in the area makes the trails crowded over the weekends. During the ascent you can enjoy great views towards the southern Marmolada Group.

The first stage of the route follows the dirt road into Valle dei Monzoni. The dirt road (paved in several stretches) ends at Malga Monzoni (1852m). Since there is a shuttle service to the Malga you might consider taking advantage of it since it is not much fun being chased off the road every 15 min when the next shuttle rushes up or down the valley. In any case a hike to Malga Monzoni takes about 30 - 40 min.

Several hundred meters past Malga Monzoni the trail splits in two. Take the right (western) branch (no 624) which follows the Gardeccia Valley up to Rifugio Vallaccia. At the Rifugio the dirt road ends and a trail traverses the southern slopes of Sas Morin. For Punta della Vallaccia go straight on to Forcella la Costella, for Sas da le Undesc you can turn north several hundred meters above Rifugio Vallaccia. The rest is a steep climb across grass slopes. The marked trail vanishes into several branches so that the final ascent must be done off-trail.

If you want to shudder on your way up to either summit take a sidestep to Forcella Vallaccia to look down the steep scree chute through which our ascent route lead. We took the route described here for descending.

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
