Risovac-Veliki Vilinac

Approach

No coach service and no railway tracks anywhere near. Youll have to drive till Risovac. From the E side:
Drive till Jablanica, approx. halfway between Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital, and Mostar, largest town in Herzegovina part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Jablanica is located 76km or so from Sarajevo. At Jablanica, turn westbound and uphill,, then downhill into Dugo polje field. Dugo polje is 25km long and 4km wide field squeezed between mountains Vran and Cvrsnica. Macadam road takes you toward "Hajducke vrleti" motel. At a junction before the motel, turn left, youll see the wooden post for Risovac,
now cut Dugo polje field diagonally to the south untill you reach the "Zicara" motel at Risovac.
From the W side, drive till town Tomislavgrad (ex Duvno) and further toward village Lipa. Thats where paved road ends. Another hour or so of drive toward east will take you to the Blidinje lake and into "Blidinje" nature park. Lake is on your right side, all you have to do is to follow the wooden posts for Risovac untill you reach the forementioned "Hajducke vrleti" motel and the junction after it. A 4x4 reccommended to perform this one, due to large sections of bumpy macadam road.

Route Description

You`ve parked in Risovac infront of the "Zicara" motel.
Risovac was refurbished and rebult as a ski venue for the 1984 Sarajevo winter olympics. Its a basepoint for skiers and a ski resort nowadays, so youll see the ski chairrlift. From the motel, one may follow marked path uphill through the woods, or just walk uphill the ski path beneath the skilift. At the and of the skipath, both routes join. Follow the marks - white circles with red borders - uphill through the wood, at one stage path winds sharp to the right, goes steep uphill and winds left. Now, you are on the south side of Cvrsnica central ridge. To get to the ridge, one would need a bit of low grade technical climbing, however the 7m high woodden ladders fixed to the rock are there waiting for you. Those are impossible to miss or overlook, marked path leads right toward them, and youll see a pit entrance 40m or so on the right side of the ladder. Climb the ladder and you are on the ridge. From there on, marked trail leads through the juniper bushes till Mali Vilinac peak. Ascending Mali Vilinac is not neccessary, however its a good point from which one may observe the terrain leading further toward Veliki Vilinac peak. While standing at Mali Vilinac, you have Veliki Vilinac right at your glance. Last stage of the trip requires descending into juniper bush area again and a bit of juniper-bush-cutting-your-way-through-juniper-bush gymnastics untill you reach western slope of Veliki Vilinac.
Walk uphill untill you summit it.
Now enjoy one of the best viewpoints in the Dinarides range.

Essential Gear

Risovac-Veliki Vilinac and back is 7 hours or so without pushing yourself too much. High walking boots reccommended, as well as all the water supply needed (no water sources enroute!). Due to security reasons - Cvrsnica was the frontline during the war in ex Yugoslavia and landmines are always an issue in outdoor Bosnia - sticking with the marked path is highly reccommended.
From V. Vilinac you may see the remains of the Vilinac hut NW and beneath you. This one is completely ruined and useless at the moment. One can stay overnight in forementioned "Zicara" motel, phone 0038739-718515, fax 0038739-718-514, mountaineers are welcomed there. Hiking reccommended inside may-early september. Mid summer is usually hot and very dry, late semptember packed with thunderstorms.
