I've often seen this peak from the highway but hadn't had the blessing of time, weather or season to do more than look until now. What a nice surprise hidden in the southern Oregon Cascades. The drive from the highway is short on a very well graded gravel road of about 7.5 miles climbing about 2,000 feet in that distance. The last mile or so gets a little rougher. There's a small area to park at the trailhead that might accomodate 5 or 6 vehicles if judiciously arrayed. The trail to the Rabbit Ears is only a few hundred yards and then the fun begins. I climbed the south side gully between the ears and inched along the ridge to the East Ear. From there it's an easy climb up the west face of the east ear to the summit. Lots of handholds make it fairly safe and easy. It looks imposing from a distance but up close it's not too bad. The West Ear looks a bit more difficult but I'd guess it can be free-climbed as well. Since I was alone and nobody knew where I was I didn't make the attempt. Later this summer for sure! Lots of mosquitos at this time of year and some snow on the road for the last 1/2 mile or so but not a hinderance to passage. This is a beautiful area with a unique ecosystem so enjoy! dn
