Pogačnik Hut

Overview

Pogačnikov dom na Kriških podih is the highest mountain hut in the Razor and Prisojnik Group of the Julian Alps.

Open: The hut is open from the second half of June until the second half of September.

Lodging: There are rooms with beds for 37 persons (mostly as bunk beds), plus a common dormitory for 22 persons (on mattresses) and a winter room enough to fit 20 persons (also on mattresses).

Food: Tasty meals are available in the hut (there is a spacious dining room in the ground floor and also an outdoor terrace where you can sit down). The menu varies from one day to another, the actual offer is presented on a blackboard behind the reception desk in the dining room. Dinner is served until 9 pm. For overnight guests, breakfast (either "ham-and-eggs" or simple scrambled eggs with bread) is available from 6 am. Drinks have to be ordered separately.

Water: Despite the fact that the Julian Alps is built up of calcareous rock, this hut has a very favourable location, as there is a spring located above it. The tap water, drawn from this source, is potable.

Location: The hut is perched on a small hilltop (2050 m) on the lower edge of the giant karst amphitheater called Kriški podi. It is surrounded by six prominent peaks: Planja, Razor, Križ, Stenar, Bovški Gamsovec, Pihavec (all of which can be accessed on waymarked routes - with the exception of the one leading up to Stenar, all trails involve secured sections). Apart from the peaks, there is also a nice view down into the valley of the Soča river, spotted with the tiny houses of Trenta village.

Access: The hut can be approached only on foot, but it is accessible from various directions. The most obvious starting points are: the Aljaž Hut (Aljažev dom) in the Vrata valley, and Trenta village in the valley of the Soča river (both of which can be accessed by car). The route from Vršič pass (also accessible by car) is a more challenging trail, including exposed and hard sections. Hence, it is rather recommended for those who already gained experience in these mountains and are equipped with a light and compact backpack.

Facilities: The ample water supply allows the use of indoor toilets in the hut. There is even warm water available in the washrooms (sinks), however there is no showering possibility. Used water is treated on-site.

Brief history

 
The hut was built by the Radovljica section of the Alpine Association of Slovenia (PZS). It is named after Jože Pogačnik, the young head of the financial committee of PZS, who suffered a fatal accident the previous day (slipping out on a snowfield) on his way to the opening ceremony.

1948 - initiation of the hut's construction
1951 - official opening, shadowed by the tragic accident
1973 - first major extension of the building (water supply solved, interior parts refurbished)
1983 - a cableway was set up from the Zadnjica valley to ease the supply of the hut
1985 - the mansard of the cableway’s upper station was developed into a winter room
1990s - solar PV panels mounted to produce off-grid electricity
2004 - the roof and the facade of the buildings replaced
2014 - wastewater treatment facility put into service
