Product Description

From the back cover:

In 1963 Colin Fletcher became the first man to walk the length of Grand Canyon, below the Rim. It began with a dream, when he and a friend detoured from a cross-country trip to take a hurried look at the great natural wonder. Standing on the Rim, surrounded by the profound and mystical silence, Fletcher knew that something had happened to the way he looked at things. He also knew that the Canyon, with it’s depths and distances, cliffs, buttes, and hanging terraces, beckoned to him, calling him on a journey that would challange both his body and his mind. The Man Who Walked Through Time is the story of that remarkable journey~two months of struggle against heat and cold, lack of water, dwindling supplies, nearly impassable terrain. It is a journey that, despite its hardships and physical challanges, became something much more than a lone explorer’s expedition. It became a pilgrimage, a stunning spiritual odyssey during which one man began to understand mankind’s singular place in the vastness of nature.

Amazing stuff!!
From "Mr Backpacker". Very well written with wit as dry as the Canyon itself. The challanges to the body and especially to the mind are revealed in this classic. Highly recommend. A great addition to your backpack when hiking into the canyon.

Classic writing!
This was one of the first backpacking books I ever read and is still one of my favorites. Though I will probably never hike in the Grand Canyon nor in an area as dry or desolate as some of the places he did, I learned about how to pack for multiple uses, self-sufficiency and low-impact on the environment back before it was the thing to do. In addition, I was entertained and inspired. Colin Fletcher has set a standard for thematic hiking how-to books and few have lived up his level since!
