Excellent shovel. Yes it is much stronger than the plastic ones and it weighs about the same. Works much better in frozen ground than plastic but will bend. I still prefer the plastic version for two reasons. It is lighter and when attached to the outside of your pack will not cut your pack or other items when your pack is moved or put down. I would never put the shovel part inside my pack for that reason. It is still a good and useful item.

Really like this shovel so far. Very light for how strong it is. Bending is an issue if you lever with it in hard snow pack so just be aware and you wont have this problem. The size is just right as it is very easy to store on the outside of your pack or inside if you have the room. I have not had it cut anything on my pack but it may get sharper as it gets used more.
I would recommend this shovel to anyone and I know REI sells lots of them compared to the other shovels they carry.

Darn Good
I've been a big fan of this shovel.
I never owned a plastic one, but i've used them and this is much better, and about the same weight. I've found it to be strong enough, but being aluminum, i'm always careful with it. I think it could bend in hard snow, but it's surpassed my expectations in this regard so far. I've kept it both in and out of my packs (Gregory Palisade, Denali and REI Talus 35) with no problems.
If you're not guiding or otherwise in need of something heavy-duty, i recommend the Mini.

Untitled ReviewThe aluminum blade works nicely for chopping out large sections of frozen snow for a tent wall. The model I have has a snow saw inside as well. Nice piece of equipment.
