I just bought these and have only used them once, but on the one trip they worked great. I kept in touch with my wife at base camp down in the Huerfano River Valley while I climbed Mount Lindsey (Colorado). The signal was perfect throughout the hike - even when ridges and hills separated us.

The one downside to these radios is that the clip sucks and there is no easy way to attach a lanyard. I just put it in my pocket.
