Overview

This is a pleasant hike with a cross country finish through grassy (and a somewhat rocky) ridges. Most of the trail is through wooded forest with an occasional meadow. Once you reach the summit ridge, the views open up. Ths finish is through a grassy meadow to a summit meadow with a cliff facing the rest of the Wallowas. This is an easy one that makes for a great day, especially if it is sunny as you can see the Wallowas and Seven Devils Area in Idaho.

Getting There

See the Getting There section on the Main Page for directions to the trailhead.

Route Description

From the trailhead, you cross a stream, look for the logs but in late summer at least it is easy to walk through (and pleasant at the end of the hike to refresh the feet). From there, the trail ambles up and roughly west through forests and an occasional meadow or flowery hillside. At 1 mile in, you come to a junction in a meadow. At 2.1 miles you come to a junction in the woods that makes for a nice rest spot. At both spots, keep left. From there, it starts climbing in earnest again and switchbacks up to an open ridge with a cairn. From this spot, look and head left and follow the easy ridge to the summit as it curves up and to the left. Enjoy the views! Return the same way. Total distance is about 3.5 miles one way with 1800 feet of elevation gain.

Essential Gear

None needed, perhaps bug repellent in early Summer.

Parents

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
