Approach

From Canmore centre drive on 1A south to Elk Run Boulevard and turn left. If you see a sign for the Alpine Club of Canada you have missed it. Turn back and turn right at the first street. Continue on this till you cross Cougar creek and park in a nice paved parking lot on your right.

The trail starts on a paved bike trail that changes to gravel after about 300 yards. Continue along this trail which follow the creek for about 7 to 8 minutes. Once you go around a slight bend in the creek you will see the trail branch of to the left up through the woods. You can not miss it, there are two large cairns.

Route Description

This is basically a hike till you get above the tree line. From here the scree slopes are faily easy but would be trickerier in bad heather. The top 50 metres of ridge walking and the final 15 metres to the actually summit are exposed and would be dangerous in bad conditions.

There first art of the trail through the woods follows a series of swithbacks. This route is similar to Grotto in this respects. When you get abouve the tree line the trail gradually changes to scree. This is easily managed by those with experience on such ground.

Once you get past the tope sections of gradual scree the route is a narrow ridge walk on an exposed section of 50 metres. This is not that hard for those who can take the exposure. The rock is good and the is desent footing and hand holds. The final 15 metres you have to descend and mount a small section which is tricker with the rock less good.

Essential Gear

Good hiking shoes, if you have some with stickier rubber they would come in handy at the summit. Clothes for changes in the weather, such as rain gear and a fleese top. Trekking poles. Ice axe if you are tying in winter conditions
