Nice JobHere's the mountain you climbed, which is on SP: Kelso Mountain. It's tough to decide to turn around, but it sounds like you made the right choice. Well written!

Re: Nice JobThanks. It was the first time I was in the area, and it looks even better in the summer. I will definately be back for some Kelso Ridge action.

Re: D'oh!I think I could have ran up it. I just needed my partner to say, let's do it and that would have been enough encouragement to get 'er done. I could tell Chris was tired though, and I have a hard time continuing climbing without my partner, that ain't right! This will make 3 fourteeners that I should have summited this summer but did not. Oh well, we will do some sweet mountaineering in RMNP and in the Collegiates!

Kelso, avalancheCongrats for going for a summit in the Colorado winter. If you didn't know already, Kelso can have deadly consequences. If you go back that way again during any winter, you might want to first check out this accident report from CAIC. http://geosurvey.state.co.us/avalanche/Default.aspx?tabid=399
Safe climbing to ya, always.

Re: Kelso, avalancheI was not aware of this! Even the route we took up Kelso was fairly challenging at first. The route pic doesn't do it justice, but there is a fair amount of rock on the lower north side of the mountain, and I am glad that we did this early in the morning because soft snow would have not allowed us to get up the slope. Welcome to SP and thanks for the comment,
Dan

Good readThanks for posting. I enjoyed reading it. Turning around is never fun... but the right choice. Had to turn myself around last weekend 45 minutes from a summit. Just have to return again. Cheers William

3 Cheers for Kelso!!Sorry you didn't get the Kelso experience, I did it as my first 14er solo this summer and had a blast! Definitely try it again in the future. I was also bummed I didn't get to go down to the Crestones this summer, hear nothing but great things about the needle. If you do ever plan a trip down there I'd love to know...part of my obstacle getting there was having nobody to go with.

Re: 3 Cheers for Kelso!!I'll let you know if I have any plans in that area! I was down there this summer, and approached from the Cottonwood Creek Side. That was quite a sturggle as the trail is not maintained at all. We were run off of the mountain due to bad weather, but still had a good time. Next time I will use the South Colony lakes side, and try to camp high over Broken Hands Pass...

Easy MistakeHA! yeah, I did the same thing when I first tried to climb Grays and Torrys. No map and during a winter snow storm. It also started to clear once we reached the summit just in time for us to figure out our mistake; although we had our skis and skied down Kelso and called it a day.
