Approach
From Interstate 15, take Lytle Creek Rd (Sierra Av.) about 6.4 miles to Middle Fork Rd. After passing a few houses this road becomes "2N58" which more or less follows the middle fork of Lytle creek. 2N58 will take you 3 miles for a very rough rocky ride directly to the Middle Fork Trailhead where you will find ample room for parking.
Route Description
Middle Fork Trail gets it's name by virtue of the fact it parallels the middle fork of Lytle creek most of the way to Ice House Saddle. This trail is popular with the Boy Scouts and other happy campers because it sees far less traffic than the Ice House Canyon Trail and has at least 3 good camp sites along the way. This route is generally not taken by people who are headed for Cucamonga Peak because it's a little more mileage and a greater elavation gain to the summit. But if you're looking for an alternative to the busyness of Ice House, this is the trail for you.
Essential Gear
For winter travel, crampons may be needed on a few dicey spots. Unless you plan to repel to one of several water falls along the creek, no technical equipment is needed.

Route CommentThe Middle Fork Road was closed about two miles before the trailhead due to washouts from the winter rains. USFS says it may be open by June 30 2005 but could be longer???

Route CommentThe road is open now, but I recommend 4x4 or high clearance. Our scout troop went up Friday 6/17/05 and to my surprise the gate was open (it was closed when I had checked 6/3/05). A tractor has restored the major washouts, but the road is still heavily rutted and in bad condition. We got to within 1/2 mile of the trailhead when my Honda Accord got stuck badly in loose dirt and rock. It took us about 45 minutes of digging and jacking up the car to get out. We hiked the remaining part of the road and it was much worse than the section where I got stuck.
