Approach

Form Ste Anne des Monts take Route 299 for 40km until you reach the Park Information Center. From ther proceed to the La Galene Parking Lot where the shuttle up to the trailhead awaits...

Route Description

As previously mentioned Xalibu is almost always climbed in conjunction with the park's highest peak Mont Jacques Cartier. Thus it requires more of a commitment than the day hike to the top of Cartier. Because of this Xalibu is one of the quietest of the main peaks. The trail to the summit of Jacques Cartier starts where the shuttle drops you off at about 840m. The way to the summit is uncomplicated and fairly simple.

From the summit the trail winds down to the Tetras shelter (located near Lac Samuel Cote). Fom the shelter the trail rises a solid 65om to the summit of Xalibu.. in places the trail is quite fun as their are some steeper and rockier sections that allow one to push themselves a bit more. The summit like all Chic Choc summits is a broad plateau covered in weathered rock and tundra.

The trail then descends down to the shore of Lac aux Americains; a glacial cirque left over from the last ice age. Then the trail meanders along through some gently rolling terrain before you arrive back at the Info. Center.

Essential Gear

It is important to dress for whatever season you will be visitng the Chic Chos in. In summer rain gear and cold weather gear are still a necessity as the temps still drop below freezing in the summer months. A sturdy pair of hiking boots is also necesary as there is plenty of patches of scree along the trail and the summit plateau.
In the winter come prepared for serious weather conditions. It is very cold through the winter as temps are known to drop down to -35 degrees celsius or colder with windchills in the -50's. The snow also falls by the meter so the only real way to access the interior of the park is one snow shoes or cross country skis
