Climbing Illimani via the normal route
Illimani (6.439 m) is one of the most beuatiful mountains in the Cordillera Real in Bolivia. It is visible virtually from everywhere in the city of La Paz.
I did the normal route to Pico Sur between the 23rd and 26th of July 2008 as member of a small group (5 guys from Austria and 2 guys from Germany).
Illimani Pico Sur is the highest of Illimani's peaks and fortunately offering a reasonably easy route (difficulty: grade II / PD, maximum steepness app. 50°).
Our local mountain guides were from Andes Expediciones (this is the agency of
Bernardo Guarachi - he was the first Bolivian on Mt. Everest in 1998, there even exists a postage stamp with his portrait in Bolivia).
In fact I had the luck to climb in a rope team with Bernardo, which was fun and very instructive.
This was our schedule after spending already 2 weeks in Bolivia and climbing Huayna Potosi (6.088m) before:
23rd of July: driving from La Paz to Pinaya, approaching base camp from the village of Pinaya
24th of July: ascending to high camp (app. 5.500m)
25th of July: summit day, descending to high camp and returning to base camp
26th of July: returning to Pinaya and driving back to La Paz
This album is a collection of the best photos taken during this climb, just to have the possibility of viewing them at a glance (obviously not only because it was a beautiful climb, but as well because it is the highest summit I've reached so far... ;o)) and because there is no album attached to Illimani, yet.
