Overview
Hollow Flake is a fun, one-pitch climb to the right of
The Staircase. Many people climb this one while waiting for the Staircase.
Getting There
Arch Rock (see main page) is 4.0 miles from the kiosk at the entrance to the canyon. Parking is scarce. There is a great spot suitable for one or two cars at the base of the crag. When that is full, park 1/4 mile upriver at a campground.
Route Description
Approach
Hike from the road on use trails straight up to the rock wall. This may involve some scrambling and/or bushwhacking. There are a million trails here, so just pick one and keep going. When you arrive at the crag, Hollow Flake is the obvious flake to the right of the Staircase.
The Climb
One pitch. See signature photo for this route. Start to the left of the flake and scramble (Class 4) up onto and along a ledge. (Note: If one begins this climb directly under the flake, it increases to 5.8. This route involves a small roof about 10 feet off the deck. The move over the roof is the tough one, and will drop you where you would have been had you scrambled over the ledge).
Once on the flake, simply follow it to the top. There is a small belay ledge with a three-point anchor. Belay and rappel here. Although the flake looks like it has a nice crack, you'll find that you won't be jamming more than once or twice on this route.
Essential Gear
Nuts, hexes, and cams up to about #3. A 50 or 60 m rope will do fine.
