Two days earlier ....

The Hochwilde is one of the high mountains on the main ridge of the Alps on the Austrian / Italian border. It has a double summit, the Südliche and Nordliche, and a wonderful rock ridge connects them. We had a good look at it two days before, from the Hinterer Seelenkogel.

A perfect day in the mountains

From the Italian side there is a steep hiking and scrambling trail to the true summit, the Südliche. Most people return the same way, but for us, the real fun would just begin on the summit: we were going over the sharp ridge to the Nördliche!

The traverse is a great varied experience, with steep hiking, scrambling, easy climbing and a glacier crossing. Add to that the magnificent views all around, and I don't know of a better way to spend a day in the mountains!

In July 2008, the five of us, including Hermann, a local mountain guide, traversed the mountain from the south to the north. We started at the Stettiner Hütte and ended the day, tired, but satisfied, in the Hochwilde Haus. And in between we had a blast!

Enjoy the pictures :D

Looking back at the Hochwilde from the Gurgler glacier after the coming off the ridge. If you look closely, you can see the crosses on both peaks.

Re: Wow!

Yep, that ridge was truly exhilarating, both just to look at and to actually go over it. And I was fortunate enough to enjoy it with a group of good friends too :D
